Application of Nylon in Intake Manifold

2023-11-20

General intake manifolds use cast iron and aluminum alloy materials. Since the 1980 s, nylon has been successfully developed to manufacture intake manifolds through the core method and friction welding method. Making the air intake manifold from nylon represents a breakthrough in replacing metal with plastic. Due to the flexibility of design, product assembly is more convenient, coupled with functional integration, can make the host plant and suppliers in terms of production efficiency and cost benefits.

Compared with aluminum alloy, the plastic intake manifold can reduce the weight of about 40%, reduce the production cost by 20% to 30%, and further reduce the cost through component integration. In addition, because the inner wall of the intake manifold is smooth, it is beneficial to improve the engine's power and fuel economy.

At present, the main production method of intake manifold is to use vibration friction welding technology, and some complex and small batch products are produced by molten core method. Usually nylon intake manifold material is 30% to 35% glass fiber reinforced nylon 6 or nylon 66, such as Rhodia's TECHNYL C218V30Black (nylon 6GF30) and TECHNYL A218V30Black (nylon 66GF30) are widely used in the manufacture of intake manifold.
